Design Methods for Hardened Piping Systems.
Abstract
The objective of the study was to develop design methods for pipe systems which are to withstand prescribed nuclear attack conditions. Various numerical, graphical, and machine analytical techniques have been examined, revised, and developed to solve such problems. Blast wave inputs and support motion inputs to simple pipe networks filled with flowing pressurized fluids were studied to determine the relative importance of various resonance conditions. The studies included the effects of the air-blast pressure history waveforms, support velocity history waveforms, pipe lengths, diameters, wall thickness, elbows, multiple branch junctions, expansion loops, bellows, metal elasticity, surge tanks, multiple support points, and types of supports. The effects of friction, cavitation, and elastic/hydraulic interaction were also considered. (Author)
