High Response Laser Flowmeter.

Abstract

The report describes the accomplishments and problems encountered in the development of a fast response laser flowmeter with a capability of accurately measuring oxidizer and fuel flow rates, during pulsed operation, of attitude control rocket engines. The theory of operation, description of equipment, test procedures, test results, conclusions and recommendations are included in the report. In the course of the development, two prototype flowmeters were constructed. One operated at 6328A and designed to measure the flow of fuel. The other operated at 11500A and designed to measure the flow of oxidizer. Tests were run on the fuel flowmeter using hydrazine. The oxidizer flowmeter was tested using freon as an oxidizer simulant. The results of these tests demonstrated that the ring laser flowmeter accurately measures flow on a pulsed basis. (Author)
