Where is the Split-Beam Shadow.

Abstract

In a stratified medium having a maximum in sound velocity giving rise to a split-beam shadow, velocity profiles of bilinear form and ray theory have been used to estimate the range to the shadow boundary. However, for velocity profile representations with smooth maxima (first and second derivatives continuous), which may be more natural, the range to the shadow boundary predicted by ray theory is infinite. The infinity arises from a failure of ray theory in the neighborhood of turning points on the rays. (Author)
