Growth of Single Crystals of Silver Iodide.

Abstract

A new technique for the growth of silver iodide crystals from solution was developed. The solubility of silver iodide in a potassium iodide solution is a function of the iodide concentration. A lowering of the iodide concentration results in a lowering of the silver iodide solubility. In the new technique, the vapor phase transport of solvent technique, the concentration of iodide in a KI-AgI-H2O solution is gradually reduced by slow dilution with water from the vapor phase. The resulting silver iodide crystals are pale yellow polyhedra several millimeters on an edge. (Author)
