Glass Lasers as Optical Generators,

Abstract

The mechanism of population inversion for a three-level laser is explained, and the importance of the lanthanide series elements, especially neodymium as laser materials is noted. Specific advantages of glass over crystals for laser material are noted, especially control of light absorption, fluorescence, and other optical characteristics by changing the chemical composition of the glass. Two tables are given showing the effect in various glass systems of single and double activation by all known ions capable of laser action. The results of research at the Department of Glass Technology of the Krakow Mining Academy to determine optimum laser glass composition and the effect of the Nd(superscript 3 plus) ion on absorptive and electrical properties and the refractive index of smelted glasses are cited. Eight such glasses were tested with details on exact chemical composition, additives, subsequent treatment, and experimental procedures given in the text.
