Error Rate Observed on HF Multichannel Fleet Broadcast System.

Abstract

Data samples of the error-rate performance of the hf multichannel Fleet broadcast system under shipboard environment and normal-to-worst-case noise conditions were taken en route to Puerto Rico and while in the Caribbean area. Under normal noise conditions, median bit-error rates were about 0.012 for single channel, 0.0055 for dual-inband diversity, and 0.001 for quad diversity. For worst-case conditions, the rates were about 0.01 for single channel, 0.003 for dual-inband diversity, and 0.001 for polarization-quad diversity. Under both conditions of environment and noise, polarization-quad diversity provided large BER improvement factors over dual diversity and single channel. System performance was better when frequencies were selected on the basis of relative BER rather than on predicted muf or S/N ratio. (Author)
