Comparative Failure Studies of Acrylate/Acrylic Acid Copolymers: BA/AA Vs. EA/AA.

Abstract

Broad-spectrum mechanical properties of ethyl acrylate/acrylic acid/Unox 221 and butyl acrylate/acrylic acid/Unox 221 gumstocks were measured by uniaxial tensile tests over a wide range of strain rates and temperatures. Correlation of the mechanical properties in terms of the molecular structure and reactivity of the two acrylate/acrylic acid copolymers was made by interpretation of their failure envelopes, and the relationships between their rubbery moduli, between their rubbery and maximum ultimate strains, and the stoichiometry of the gumstocks. A computer program is presented which shifts the mechanical property data to achieve time-temperature superposition, thus eliminating the laboratory conditions of the test, and permitting direct comparisons of reduced mechanical properties, to be made between the two systems.
