On the Limiting Magnitude for a Ground-Based Telescope.

Abstract

The limiting visual magnitude for star detectibility in the nighttime sky as a function of telescope aperture for ground-based telescopes is considered. The consequences of this for satellite photography are also discussed. The approach is heuristic and discussional, with detailed prototype calculations and useful formulae. (Author)
