Underwater Photographs in the Strait of Gibraltar.

Abstract

Underwater photographs of the sea-floor taken at stations along the Gibraltar-Ceuta axis are presented. The sea-floor in the centre of the Strait appears to be composed mainly of compacted sand in which extensive ripple marks are evident. These ripples, together with photographic evidence of suspended matter above the sea-floor, confirm the existence of strong bottom currents. The patchiness of the bottom between Gibraltar and Ceuta is confirmed but many more photographs and grab samples would be required to gain a detailed knowledge. (Author)
