Sediments and Reef Corals of Cayo Arenas, Compeche Bank, Yucatan, Mexico.

Abstract

The report presents the results of sediment analyses and reef coral studies pursued on Cayo Arenas, a small bank or shelf reef on the edge of the Campeche Bank in the Gulf of Mexico. Morphology and sediments of the Island is discussed and sediment parameters (grain size, sorting and constituents) of samples taken on and adjacent to the reef are presented. Reef corals observed and collected are tabulated and their depth zonation presented. The influence of wind and water currents on reef development, form, and sediment constituents is evaluated.
