Measured Air Loads for a Free-Fall Weapon on an A-4 Aircraft.

Abstract

A six-component internal balance was installed in a free-fall weapon shell, Rockeye II, and an extensive balance calibration was completed. Both the balance and calibration are described in detail. Captive flight loads data were obtained for 16 different aircraft-bomb rack-weapon configurations. All flights were conducted with the balance installed on primary or multiple-carriage bomb racks, including the MER, TER, Aero 7A and Aero 20A. Two weapon modifications were used in the tests and each flight was on the A-4 aircraft under level-flight, steady-state conditions at airspeeds from 225 knots IAS to maximum airspeed. (Author)
