Vapor Phase Impregnation of Active Carbons.

Abstract

Work was done on the vapor deposition of platinum on an active carbon, and the vapor deposition of a metal halide on an active carbon. A sample of 1% by weight platinum impregnated carbon was treated with hydrogen at 350C. A sample of AlCl3 impregnated carbon was prepared by subliming the metal halide into carbon at 200C. Further work was done during this period on the vapor deposition of copper and chrome to produce a carbon with CK agent activity. CrO3 deposition parameters were varied and different post-treatments tried in an effort to produce a CK3 agent active form. It was discovered that the vapor deposited CrO3 was being reduced during the final drying step, and tests were performed to identify the reason for this reduction. Pore size distribution calculations were performed on samples of plain carbon, vapor impregnated carbons and solution impregnated carbons to determine coating distribution achieved by each of the processes. These calculations show that vapor impregnation process deposits most of the material on pores less than twelve angstroms in diameter, while solution processes deposit no material in these pores. Graphs drawn using these data showed that solution impregnation processes deposit most of the material on 12A to 20A pores. (Author)
