Alternating Current Induction MHD Generator Research.
Abstract
The basic relationships of liquid metal MHD generators are presented, along with their application to the constant velocity and variable velocity models. Two computer program solutions were prepared to predict generator performance and operating characteristics. One program involves a hydrodynamic analysis combined with Maxwell's equations and is solved by the method of small perturbation. The other program involves the equivalent circuit of the MHD generator. Both programs yield similar results when real machine effects were accounted for. A developmental variable velocity, constant slip generator was fabricated and performance tested in a NaK loop. During the testing sequence, loop operational difficulties occurred which prevented achieving full generator design performance. Despite these drawbacks, the generator produced a net output of 4.5 Kwe and an estimated total electrical conversion of 32 Kw. (Author)
