Study on Efficiency Improvements in O-Type Traveling-Wave Tubes.

Abstract

Hot test data are given of an experimental high efficiency tube for high power and large bandwidth. The tube uses a helix slow wave structure with anisotropic shield loading to reduce the phase velocity dispersion and to increase the bandwidth. Efficiency enhancement is achieved with a voltage jump on the slow wave structure and a single biased double stage collector. The tube operates with 40% to 50% efficiency over an octave bandwidth at S-band for a range of beam perveances and voltages, with output power levels in the range of 500 watts of 2.5 kilowatts. When the tube is driven also with a coherent harmonic signal, the efficiency and output power at the lower frequency range are enhanced. (Author)
