Jettison Test. XM19/MK45 Flare Dispenser Installed in the UH-1C Helicopter.

Abstract

In-flight jettison tests of the XM19/MK45 flare dispenser were conducted utilizing a UH-1C helicopter in order to determine a suitable jettison flight envelope. Eight simulated, fully-loaded flare dispensers and one actual, empty flare dispenser were jettisoned at Edwards Air Force Base, California. Limits of the level-flight jettison envelope investigated are 20 degrees of sideslip in either direction at airspeeds from hover to 80 knots calibrated airspeed (KCAS) and then decreasing linearly to a 10-degree sideslip in either direction at 100 KCAS with a maximum airspeed for jettison of 100 KCAS. Throughout the jettison envelope adequate clearance between the aircraft structure and the flare dispenser was maintained during jettison, and no objectionable aircraft motions or reactions were observed.
