Oceanographic Cruise Summary. Marine Biofouling Studies off Oahu, Hawaii.

Abstract

Marine biofouling studies are being conducted off Oahu, Hawaii by the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office. These studies will provide marine scientists with data which relate to the performance of underwater weapons systems and other marine hardware. Sampling was conducted by means of exposing standard wood/asbestos test panels upon racks suspended 50 and 100 feet deep. The data collected indicated that the fouling was of moderate severity off Oahu. The fouling community was largely composed of cosmopolitan species, dominated by tubeworms, barnacles, encrusting bryozoans, and algae. The fouling collected at the 50-foot level was approximately ten times as heavy as that from 100 feet. Appreciable amounts of fouling settled within 2 and 4 months at 50 feet and 100 feet, respectively. Marine borers destroyed the wooden panels after 4 months of exposure. The study will continue at the present site and at a new one nearer to shore. (Author)
