Constitutive Rock Properties for the HANDEC II Site.
Abstract
An extensive series of laboratory tests was performed on rock cores taken from borings in the test bed of the HANDEC II experiment. The purpose of these tests was to define the intact rock properties and formulate a material model for the test site suitable for use in conjunction with one-and two-dimensional, ground-motion prediction codes. The rock at the HANDEC II site is a massive quartz diorite intrusion which is rather heavily jointed to a depth of about 30 feet. The drilling logs and test data indicate that a two-layer model represents the site reasonably well. The upper layer extends from the surface to a depth of 30 feet, and the lower layer extends from 30 feet downwards. Failure criteria were determined from triaxial compression, unconfined compression, and tensile splitting tests. (Author)
