The Heat Losses of an Ingot during Its Solidification,

Abstract

The heat exchange between the six-ton ingot, the chill mold and the ambient medium was determined by an experimental thermal measurement and by calculation. The strain pattern in the chill mold was judged from the heat-exchange rate curves of the chill mold. In the course of 13 min after casting the chill mold accumulates all of the heat transmitted by the ingot. The thicker the chill-mold walls, the longer this time. The inner layers mostly participate in the change of the chill-mold's heat content. The consequence of the constant passage of heat through the wall is the strain developed in it, which is the cause of the premature phase-out of the chill mold. For 50 min after the initiation of casting, thermal equilibrium sets in a certain type of chill mold; the same heat quantity obtained by the chill mold will transfer to the ambient medium. Substantial differences in the thermal stress of the chill mold in the timely or late extraction of the ingot were ascertained. (Author)
