Assessment of Technology Status on Protective Coatings for Tantalum Structures.

Abstract

The report discusses the technology status of coatings and processes for Tantalum Re-entry Vehicle Structures applications requiring utilization at the upper temperature range. The complexity of this total refractory metal coating technical problem area is evidenced by the number of coatings and processes which have been explored. All known coatings and processes are discussed and compared in an effort to provide the reader with an unbiased and understandable picture which will allow him to objectively judge the merits of each coating and/or process. The various coating processes, the known effect on structural substrates, the versatility of application, and proven reliability or lack thereof, is presented. (Author)
