Airborne MHD Generator Development.

Abstract

The objective of this contract was to establish the performance of a lightweight magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) power system. In pursuance of this goal a heat-sink multi-segmented 45 degree diagonal wall power channel was designed, fabricated and thermally tested at operating duration times of ten seconds. A similar heat-sink channel with a slant wall angle of 60 degrees was designed and partially fabricated. Combustor plasma conductivity levels of up to 20 mhos/meter were demonstrated using cesium carbonate as the seeding agent. A 55 kilogauss superconducting magnet coil was tested in a test dewar to the 35 kilogauss level. (Author)
