Near-Zone Calibrations for Antennas and Field Intensity Meters.

Abstract

A scheme is presented that is appropriate for the tasks of routine calibrations of antennas or field intensity meters. Basically, this scheme consists of using a pre-determined near-zone correction so that relatively short separation distances can be used for the power transmission between a standard antenna and an unknown antenna. The near-zone correction is applied to the received power and then the characteristics of the unknown antenna are calculated as though the power transfer had taken place under far-zone conditions. This scheme permits the use of a small, inside antenna range. Methods for measuring the near-zone corrections are discussed and an actual measurement is described and discussed. The use of the measured near-zone corrections is exemplified by an inside, near-zone calibration of a laboratory-model field intensity meter; and this calibration is verified by an outside, far-zone calibration of the same instrument. It is concluded that this scheme, the near-zone correction method, can greatly reduce the calibration effort where the task is to calibrate numbers of essentially identical antennas, even though the measurement of the required corrections is fairly difficult.
