The Land Border of South Vietnam: Some Physical and Cultural Characteristics

Abstract

A tabular record is given of border features from the Gulf of Thailand to the Tonkin Gulf, including topography, vegetation types and density, foot trafficability, movement routes (roads, tracks, trails, and waterways), climatology, and the composition and density of ethnic and tribal border populations. The 1700 kilometer-long border zone is defined from the border line to a depth of 10 km inside South Vietnam. Detailed data summaries and maps of each sector are appended to the text. Tables of average seasonal rainfall and maps of precipitation patterns are included. The work is presented to enable design and operation of alternative counterinfiltration systems.
