Research on Tropical Rainfall Patterns and Associated Mesoscale Systems.
Abstract
A study of the beginning and end of the rainy seasons in Southeast Asia was made using five day totals of rainfall. Different areas had different situations. In general this rainy season has a fitful beginning with a series of surges of rainfall traversing the area. These surges continue to arrive throughout the rainy season. The ending is rather uniform. Eight stations in Southeast Asia, with long-periods of record, were selected. The means of pentad rainfall were analyzed for the nature of the apparent randomness of the fluctuations. It was found that some real (from the statistical viewpoint) variations did exist among the pentads: especially in the cessation of the 'rainy season' which was, in general, more abrupt than the commencement. A short study of the maximum five day totals indicated that the amounts were extremely variable. One station had its greatest rainfall during the 'dry season.' The amounts of rainfall were generally less than expected. The same conditions are described. (Author)
