A Design Study of a C-5 Aircraft Cargo Loading System for Major Permanent Terminals.

Abstract

The report examines several operational and design options for cargo loading systems suitable for installation at a major Air Force APOE. Detailed design development of four concepts is shown and the resulting operational capabilities and ten-year system costs are given. A plot of cost as a function of aircraft turnaround time is presented as a decision-making tool. Evaluation criteria and methodologies are discussed and system cost sensitivities to important variables are plotted. The report concludes that the final decision on loading system concept selection must, necessarily, be influenced by considerations of the relative importance placed on aircraft flight time utilization that results from loading system operating capabilities. Finally, conditional recommendations are made to emphasize the effect on loading system selection of varying evaluation parameters. A contractor recommendation is made for a loading system design, and facility and equipment specification requirements are given suitable for its procurement. (Author)
