Reliability Considerations for Data Processing Systems in Ballistic Missile Defense.
Abstract
This report deals qualitatively with the reliability requirements imposed upon data processing systems by their use in ballistic missile defense (BMD) systems. Three types of redundancy are described: (1) backup systems, (2) multicomputer systems, and (3) massive redundancy; and quantitative estimates of their effect upon system reliability are derived. The advantages and disadvantages of each form of reliability are summarized. Considerations about the selection of a data processing system for BMD are presented, along with a recommended configuration.
