Use of Numerically Controlled Machine Tools Aboard U. S. Navy Destroyer Tenders.

Abstract

The practicability of numerically controlled (NC) machine tools aboard U.S. Navy tenders and repair ships is investigated. The advantages of NC tools are listed and the applicability to various shops is discussed. Three specific types of NC machines are recommended for new construction or replacement of worn-out conventional tools. Analysis shows that direct replacement is economically attractive but the principal advantage is improved tender response time in meeting the maintenance services needs of ships alongside. (Author)
