An Ultraviolet Sensing Flame Detector for Use on High Performance Military Aircraft.

Abstract

An effort was directed toward the development of a reliable, solar blind ultraviolet sensitive flame detector for use on high performance military aircraft. The sensor is a small, quartz enclosed photon detector utilizing the avalanche in a gas discharge to amplify the photoelectric signal currents. Optimization of the design of the sensor and ultraviolet test lamp is discussed. Theoretical work, problems encountered and developmental test work are reviewed. The electrical circuitry and flight test equipment are described. The performance testing of a completed system under simulated environmental conditions is reported. A specification covering the performance and installation of a system on an aircraft is included in the report. A set of installation and maintenance instructions are appended as well as a set of engineering drawings of the system parts. (Author)
