Advanced Development of the Packaging and Deployment of a Shielded Flare.
Abstract
The primary purpose of this program was to analyze, design, and demonstrate through flight tests the effective deployment of a reflecting device on a flare from a packaged condition. From previous work, the optimum shield configuration had been determined and it was to this configuration that the shield was to deploy after parachute inflation. The various moments acting on the shield as it deploys from its packaged state were the primary factors requiring analysis. Based on a packaged envelope configuration of a cylinder 36-inches long and eight inches in diameter, the shield has to deploy so as to have a minimum included angle of 60 degrees and must extend 20 inches below the initial flare candle burning front. Five specific moments were included in the analytical studies. Once the analyses were completed, deployment components were fabricated and tested afterwhich static tests of live shielded flares were conducted.
