Study of Causes of Pavement Deterioration. Survey of D-Cracking at Air Force Bases.
Abstract
A survey was made to determine the extent and severity of 'D' cracking in concrete pavements at Air Force Bases in the United States. Information was obtained from 49 Air Force Bases in all parts of the country with weather conditions ranging from mild to very severe. The data indicate that the problem with 'D' cracking is limited mainly to an area in the central part of the country which has moderately cold weather. There is no 'D' cracking in airfield pavements located in areas which have mild weather, and very little 'D' cracking in northern areas which have very cold weather. There is some evidence that poor subgrade drainage conditions and the large number of freeze-thaw cycles which occur in the moderately cold climate in the central part of the country are contributing factors to the development of 'D' cracking.
