On the Occurrence of Diphtheria-Immunity and Tetanus Immunity in Animals
Abstract
The immunity of rabbits and mice, which are immunized against tetanus, is based on the capacity of the cell-free blood fluid to render harmless the toxic substances produced by the tetanus bacilli. The results of experiments proved that: The blood of the tetanus-immunized rabbits has qualities to destroy the tetanus poison; These qualities can be found in the extra-vascular blood as well as in the cell-free serum taken out of the blood; These qualities are of such a permanent nature that they remain effective also in the organism of other animals so that one is able to attain outstanding therapeutical effects through blood and serum transfusions; and The anti-tetanus poisons are not found in the blood of animals that are not immunized against tetanus.
