Display-Observer Performance Study.

Abstract

Two previously developed models which predict the probability that a human observer will detect targets of military interest on a two-dimensional display have been investigated. Model A is part of a large scale computer model; an analytical approximation to this model was derived. Model B calculates single-glance detection probabilities using an analogy between the performance of a human observer and a matched filter, and can be applied to a wider variety of tasks than Model A. This model was modified and extended. The calculational form of Model B was simplified, and the display search process was analyzed: the results were incorporated into the model. Good agreement is found between calculations from Model B and human performance in simple visual tasks, and between both models and results of a field test. (Author)
