Analysis and Flight Evaluation of a Newly Developed Fast Rise Meteorological Balloon at the Kwajalein Missile Range, Marshall Islands,

Abstract

The report presents the results of a test series of a novel type combination fast rising high-altitude meteorological balloon conducted at the Kwajalein Missile Range. The ML-566 balloon assembly consists of an inner high altitude balloon and an outer streamline balloon. It is designed to ascend rapidly to approximately 50,000 ft where the streamline balloon bursts and falls away from the inner balloon which then continues to accelerate to termination altitudes in excess of 100,000 ft. The balloon design is for ascent rates in excess of 1700 ft/min in the daytime and 1600 ft/min at night. (Author)
