Determination of Winds and Other Atmospheric Parameters by Satellite Techniques. Volume 4: Physics of the Atmosphere

Abstract

The physical characteristics of the terrestrial atmosphere are reviewed for the purpose of providing a physical background for a study of requirements and techniques for the determination from satellites of winds and other atmospheric parameters. The nature of the atmosphere, its physical processes, and the variability of its parametes are described. Topics treated, in turn, are solar radiation as it affects the atmosphere, the troposphere, stratosphere and mesosphere, the thermosphere and the ionosphere.
