Acoustic Transient Signal Study. Transient Generator Research Report.

Abstract

The current approach in CW Sonar Systems results in systems of increasing size, weight, power requirement, manning, decreased security with increasing reverberation and cavitation limitations. A new approach is proposed-a sonar system employing high energy, short duration, positive pressure pulses named CIG (Controlled transient Impulse Generator system). An analytically determined step function waveform train was electronically synthesized and used to drive electrostrictive transducers. A number of these developed transient acoustic signals in water having 4 to 1 positive to negative amplitude excursion of the first impulse cycle. Subsequent amplitude limitation of 1 to 1 for succeeding cycles, was maintained. The acoustically developed transient compares favorably with the well known IMP generated impulse whose positive-to-negative excursions are 5 to 1. (Author)
