Development of a Solar Heat Reflecting Gray Undercoat.

Abstract

This report covers the development of white and gray undercoats having solar heat reflecting (SHR) properties for use as basecoats for SHR topcoats. Comparable reflective properties are provided by these undercoats at a 66 percent reduction in dry film thickness as compared to specification white paints. The gray undercoat was formulated for decreased combat detectability by providing reduced contrast to SHR olive drab topcoats. Elementary theories of electromagnetic scattering were used in selecting the prime pigment. (Author)
