Future Warfare in Urban Areas

Abstract

The study lists advanced materiel concepts for neutralizing or controlling a defended urban area which is void of non-combatants and which consists of a high density, ordered, city-like structures. The study was conducted with recognition of the constraints of accomplishing a combat mission in minimum time, with minimum friendly casualties, minimum incidental damage to the urban area. The study scope included description of seizure and clearance operations in which future friendly forces seek to occupy the urban area and engage in conflict with well-trained and organized enemy regulators. Thirty- eight ideas for enhancing urban conflict of the future were derived and discussed. Typical of these ideas were: a small controllable air reconnaissance device, large volume quick hardening foams, personnel carrier assault vehicle designed for urban environment and a remote control expendable ground reconnaissance vehicle.
