Piezocrystal Constrained Gyro Development Program,

Abstract

A new concept in mechanizing a gyro for strapdown applications has been conceived and demonstrated. The key to this development is pressure sensitive crystals which are mounted in such a manner as to constrain any motion about the gyro's output axis. This report deals with the analysis and experimental results obtained on an initial breadboard model. The gyro was not evaluated against a particular set of requirements but, rather, it was examined as a general solution to strapdown applications. The results of this investigation indicate that the constrained gyro is a highly feasible technique for all strapdown applications. It provides a digital output directly from the sensor without the need of analog to digital converters or precision torquers. Several design weaknesses were uncovered, as well as the outstanding good system results. (Author)
