1100-HP Roller Gear Drive

Abstract

The report reviews the dynamic load tests performed on two roller gear test units. The primary purpose of the task was to conduct a 200-hour dynamic load test at 100-percent design speed and 100-percept design load. The testing system employed the principle of back-to-back coupling (four-square loop) of two test units in a closed-power path. An instrumentation system was provided to measure loads, speed, oil flows, pressures, temperatures, and vibration levels. In addition, frequent analysis of the lubrication oil was made to determine the iron content in parts per million to provide a warning of incipient failure.
