Research on Flight Control Systems. Volume I. The Flow Difference Sensor.
Abstract
Battle damage studies on U.S. aircraft operating in Southeast Asia have pointed out that a significant percentage of aircraft losses have been caused by ground-fire hits on the aircraft hydraulic systems. Isolation devices which shut off the damaged branch of a hydraulic system with a minimum loss of fluid offer a solution to the vulnerability problem. To meet the requirement for a battle damage isolation device for hydraulic systems, the flow difference sensor was designed and developed. The operation of the flow difference sensor is based on the fact that in a correctly operating hydraulic system, return flow is in a fixed ratio to supply flow. Deviation from the correct flow ratio must be a leak. The flow difference sensor uses orifices to measure the return and supply flow and shuts off the pressure line flow when a flow difference above a design detection threshold exists. (Author)
