X-Band CW Generator Development.

Abstract

The purpose of this contract was to develop and construct klystron amplifiers capable of generating one megawatt of CW power at X-Band. Two tubes and one dc test vehicle were built during the program. The dc test vehicle was successfully operated at dc beam powers as high as 2.45 megawatts with no measurable interception. The first tube was operated for a one-hour test run period at 750 kW CW power output, and for periods of about ten minutes each at an output of 1050 kW. Operation time at the megawatt level was not limited by the rf structure, but rather by arcing in the cathode region. The second tube was operated for one hour at the 500 kW CW output level, and at powers up to 750 kW. The design of the tubes and associated water loads is discussed, and the test results are presented. (Author)
