Electronically Tuned High Power Network.

Abstract

This report presents and discusses the areas explored during the second quarter of a study effort to develop electronically tuned matching networks intended for use with a VHF whip antenna in the 30 to 76 MHz frequency range. Two RF power capabilities are to be considered; 10 watts and 100 watts. Two separate computer programs are presented and discussed; one constructing a 'PI' network and a second constructing a 'T' network, which systematically synthesize and analyze performance of a matching network according to predetermined criteria. The construction method is designed to simulate a procedure consistent with the control logic which might be used in tuning an actual network. The results obtained by using the two programs on the worst case impedance characteristics of a VHF whip antenna are given for comparison. Also, a detailed analytical discussion of the 'Q meter' technique of measuring ferrite material permeability and 'Q' is presented along with measurement data on three different ferrite materials, each tested in two configurations of applied external D.C. bias flux. Finally, measured results of reverse bias shunt capacity and forward bias series resistance of three PIN diodes, potentially useful for RF switching, are given. (Author)
