MALLARD Communications Traffic Requirements.

Abstract

This first quarterly technical progress report covers work performed under TD-230 to 31 March 1970. A computer simulation study of communication traffic requirements has been performed for an Australian deployment. The basic traffic data, in the form of individual source to sink requirements known as Annex Z, was provided by the Australian MALLARD Working Party. The Fortran programmes of TD-32 with local modifications, were used to derive the User Needline and Nodal Needline Data Files from the Annex Z input. The TD-15 Model I programmes, which assume infinite channel capacities, have been used to simulate traffic conditions for the deployment during two computer sessions. For the first session, a six-node analysis was used with all five modes of MALLARD TRAFFIC POOLED. The results were used to size the eight trunk links and six trunk access switches. For the second session a twenty node analysis was used for the same deployment, with (1) all five modes of traffic pooled, and (2) each mode considered separately. The results can be used to size minor/access switches and mobile sub-systems within the deployment, and also to provide a breakdown of channel requirements by mode at each switch and link. Work has been done in evaluating the results in terms of Grade of Service provided at trunk/access switches, and in estimating the overall accuracy of the simulation study. (Author)
