Primary Irritation Evaluation Program Study.

Abstract

Eleven candidate repellents were evaluated on New Zealand White rabbits for their potential to cause skin and eye irritation. This was used as a basis for making the following recommendations concerning their use on humans. There are no restrictions for the topical application to humans of ENT-17415-a, ENT-18630-Ga, and ENT-20107. ENT-14254-a, ENT-16739, ENT-19707, and ENT-20548-aGa should be used with caution around the eyes and mucosa. ENT-7198-a should be used with extreme caution, and its use should be restricted to areas other than the face. ENT-396-a and ENT-1789-c may be used in clothing or on unabraded human skin. ENT-2485-a may be used with extreme caution as a clothing impregnant but should not be used directly on the skin. Those compounds found to be irritating to the skin or the eyes should be resubmitted in the form and at the concentration of their intended use so that their irritation potential can be reexamined.
