Coherent Multiplexing and Array Techniques.
Abstract
Several techniques are being developed for use in implementing practical communications systems. Both experimental and analytical results relevant to the performance of systems employing the techniques are given. The experimental performance of a system for phasing the signals transmitted from a four element array to achieve and maintain signal coherence at the input to a satellite repeater is described. In this system, the bi-phase modulated up-link signals are sequentially tagged in a manner which permits estimates of the phasing errors to be obtained by processing the down-link signal. Discrete phase control circuits are employed to correct phasing errors. Two methods being developed for coherently combining bi-phase modulated signals received by an array of antennas are described. Possible approaches for providing up-link protection to time division multiple access (TDMA) systems are discussed. Factors which affect the performance of practical digital demodulators are discussed. (Author)
