The Development of a 250 to 500 KW Arc Lamp for Airborne Illumination.

Abstract

The development of an argon vortex-stabilized arc lamp is documented. Electrical power inputs in the range 250 to 500 kw are considered, and multi-hour continuous operation is emphasized with gas recirculation. A luminous efficiency about 45 lumens/electrical input watt has been determined. Components and auxiliary structures of the arc lamp are designed for the purpose of airborne applications. A detailed analysis of the optical design with an experimental evaluation of collector-reflector systems is also presented. (Author)
