Research on Dynamic Response and Adhesion Failures of Rain Erosion Resistant Coatings.
Abstract
The first phase of a program of experimental and analytical research on thebehavior of rain erosion resistant coatings is reported. The objectives were todevelop a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar facility, and to develop the necessarytechniques for measuring the dynamic response of coating materials. Thedynamic testing facility which has been developed is capable of obtainingstress-strain curves under compressive loadings up to a strain rate of ten to thefourth power in/in/sec., and up to 500 F. Impact tests have provided preliminarydynamic stress-strain curves for the following materials: 1100-0 aluminum,MIL-C-7439 Neoprene, Hill AFB Polyurethane, AMD Polyurethane Type G-6, and anacrylic plastic. The contrasting dynamic properties observed for these materialsclearly indicate their relative capabilities to resist rain erosion and inhibitadhesion failures. (Author, modified-PL)
