Cumulative Damage Studies of Conventional-Cast Composite-Modified Double-Base Propellant.
Abstract
This report describes results from a one-year study of cumulative damage mechanisms in conventional-cast, composite-modified, double-base (CMDB) propellant. Testing was performed on Hercules' FKM propellant, which is a typical member of the CMDB propellant family. Test data were correlated to provide usable design envelopes depicting CMDB propellant damage as a function of the number of loading cycles and the level of loading. Major emphasis in the program was placed on extensive propellant testing and phenomenological aspects of the failure process. During the course of the program, 433 tests were performed to investigate the applicability of several well-known failure criteria and to develop usable design envelopes. None of the failure criteria investigated were generally applicable to the propellant, but all demonstrated at least qualitative applicability in some instances. (Author)
