Development of Improved Visible Marker Compositions.

Abstract

This report summarizes the work accomplished in the development, fabrication, and testing of an improved castable colored smoke and flame marker composition for use in the LUU-2/B Target Marker and in the 2.75-Inch Target Marking Warhead. A red flame, a yellow flame, and a red flame and smoke were developed for the LUU-2/B Target Marker, while red, yellow, and orange smokes, along with red and yellow flames, were developed for the 2.75-Inch Target Marking Warhead. Development effort included composition ingredients, insulation, and ignition systems. LUU-2/B tests were conducted from a tower and from aircraft, while the 2.75-Inch Target Marking Warhead was tested using a launcher to simulate actual warhead conditions. The development program was successful. The systems are ready for engineering development and pilot production. (Author)
