Soil Displacement Transducer.

Abstract

A transducer system for measuring the vertical motion of the earth surface was designed and fabricated. The system was designed to be capable of measuring displacement of 36 inches at velocities between zero and 100 feet per second induced by combined input loadings of 5000 g vertical and 2500 g horizontal accelerations. Two complete systems consisting of the transducers, the reference and isolation system, a soil matching plate, a control panel, and other protective hardware were fabricated. The transducers were tested and successfully operated with a vertical input consisting of a half sine acceleration impulse with a peak level of 3000 g and a duration of 1 millisecond. The transducer and control panel were then subjected to a series of static tests to obtain performance and characteristics and to determine the degree of compliance with design specifications.
