The Colloid Theory of the Structure of Plastic Lubricants,
Abstract
The authors assert that colloid-chemical considerations would assist in the interpretation of structural changes of lubricants. An account is given of the structure of lubricating greases at rest and it is stated that the majority of lubricating greases are reversible lyophilic polydisperse oleogels. The authors, however, point out that some types of lubricants do not meet the above definition, and that the solid phase in greases is in some cases disperse and in others difforms. In any case however, lubricating greases belong to the group of complex collodial systems. The problems of syneresis, the changes in the structure of colloid systems due to mechanical loading, the phenomenon called gelification, and certain questions of terminology are also discussed.
